Highlanders Take Pair In Suspended Doubleheader

TIFTON, Ga. – In a doubleheader that began here on Wednesday and finished in Barnesville three days later ultimately resulted in Gordon State taking a 19-14, 8-4 sweep over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association action.

Game one went the full nine innings here as Gordon State used a six-run eighth inning to pull away for the five-run victory.

But a line of thunderstorms suspended the second game in the third inning with GSC leading 3-0.

So the two teams concluded that game on Saturday in Barnesville and GSC rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the four-run triumph.

DJ Banks (Marietta, Ga. / McEachern HS) led the way in the opening win with a 4-for-6 game at the plate that included a homer, four runs scored and two RBI.

Cole Phillips (Trion, Ga. / Trion HS) also homered during a 2-for-6 day that included two RBI and two runs scored.

Derek Wylie (Warner Robins, Ga. / Veterans HS) and Sam Kuchinski (Powder Springs, Ga. / Harrison HS) also had two hits as GSC pounded out 16 hits and coaxed 12 walks against ABAC pitching.

Kuchinski had three RBI, three walks and a run scored.

Preston Felt (Buford, Ga. / Flowery Branch HS) eventually earned the win for GSC with five innings on the mound in which he gave up three unearned runs on five hits while striking out nine and walking one.

In the suspended game, Cole Stanford (Ellerslie, Ga. / Harris Co. HS) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run while Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier HS), Wylie and Banks each had a pair of hits.

Wylie also drove in two runs along with Carson Renz (Dacula, Ga. / Mill Creek HS) for the Highlanders (19-12 overall, 8-4 GCAA).

Ramsey David (Dacula, Ga. / Buford HS) got the win with five innings of work and didn't allow a run while surrendering just three hits and striking out four.
