
PLANO, Texas – ABAC’s tennis Stallions are ninth in the overall standings after the second day of play in the NJCAA Men’s National Tournament. The event, which is scheduled to conclude Friday, is held at Collin College.
There is a four-way tie at the top of the field that includes the host school, Cowley, Eastern Florida State, and Tyler – all with 27 points. Pratt and Seward are both one point behind and tied for fifth. ABAC has 19 points entering the third day of action.
ABAC’s top player, sophomore Antonin Leborne, will play in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round after opening with two strong wins. He opened with a 6-4, 6-3 upset over fourth-seeded Victor Alves from Barton and followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Prairie State College’s Nick Velders. He faces Weatherford’s Bruno Britez in the quarters.
In Flight 4, Stallion sophomore Antoine Schaub, seeded eighth, beat College of Lake County’s Lukas Januskis 60-, 6-1 before putting together a great comeback to beat Jacksonville College’s Franco Vedda 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. In Wednesday’s quarterfinals, Schaub faces Eastern Florida State’s Tomas Quesada Perez, the top seed.
Also in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round is sophomore Benjamin Ranby-Al, the seventh seed, who will meet second-seeded Alejandro Gonzalez from Cowley. Ranby-Al opened with wins over Hartford’s Aaron Gerald (6-0, 6-0) and Wallace State’s Brett Foster (6-4, 6-1).
In doubles play, ABAC picked up points from the team of Leborne & freshman Zachary Riley, seeded eighth in Flight 2, as the team won its first two matches. They will play Nick Devivo & Colin Tavares from Eastern Florida State in Wednesday’s semis. The pair opened by topping Simon Cooper and Francisco Miguel from Copiah-Lincoln 6-3, 7-5 before winning the closest match played on Tuesday. They knocked off Harford’s Tristan Duval & Unai Llerena Perez 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.
Sixth-seeded freshman Petar Wemmenhove was upset in the first round of the second flight by Weatherford’s Alexis Leguizamon 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. In the consolation round, Wemmenhove easily defeated Jacob Ole from Marion Military Institute 8-1 and will face Zvikomborero Bingura from Illinois Valley Community College on Wednesday.
Both Riley and sophomore Matthew Rodgers won their opening matches before falling in Tuesday’s second round. Playing in Flight 3, Riley beat Meridian’s Simon Ojeda 6-4, 6-3 before losing to Weatherford’s Emmanuel Jebutu 1-6, 6-4, 3-0 when Riley could not continue. Rodgers beat Itawamba’s Knox Waterer 6-4, 6-3 before losing to Seward’s Ognjen Gajic 6-1, 6-2.
ABAC’s top doubles team of Schaub & Wemmenhove lost their opener to Pratt’s Alexi Khamrotau & Simeon Latinchev 6-1, 6-3. They rallied to knock off Wallace State’s Jace Moody & Jose Munoz 8-5 in the consolation round and face Illinois Valley’s Bingura & Shingai Manyonga in the next round. Also, the Stallion team of Ranby-Al & Rodgers beat Lewis & Clark’s Joe Brangenberg & Stetson Isringhausen in the opening round of the third flight 6-3, 6-0 before losing to Pratt’s Sixto Golobart & Valentino Iveli 6-4, 6-1.
