JOPLIN, Mo. – ABAC sophomore Whit Hayes carded an 80 Tuesday in the second round of the NJCAA Division II Men’s National Championship at the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. After a 76 on the opening day, Hayes is 12 over par and tied for 52nd in the 141-player field.

All golfers did not get a chance to finish their round on Tuesday. Grant Greazel from Kirkwood Community College leads the tournament at 2 under par after finishing 12 holes in the second round. Jaden McLoud from Chandler-Gilbert Community College is at -1 and they are the only two golfers under par.

Hayes had an up and down second round, starting slow with bogeys on his first four holes. He steadied himself and added only one more bogey on the front nine, closing it with a 41. The back nine got off to a better start with a birdie on the par-5 10th before he dropped double bogeys on the 12th and 14th. He finished with four straight pars.

Play will continue Thursday before the tournament concludes Friday. Hayes is the only ABAC golfer to qualify for the event and is playing as an individual. In the team competition, Mississippi Gulf Coast is 12 over par, a three-shot lead over Kirkwood and Des Moines Area Community College.
