CARTERSVILLE – ABAC’s Stallions fell behind early Tuesday to the top-seeded Georgia Highlands (GHC) Chargers Tuesday and never caught up in an 11-3 loss during the second round of the Georgia College Athletic Association baseball tournament.
The loss sends the Stallion to the consolation bracket where they will face South Georgia State College Wednesday at 10 a.m. South Georgia State lost 13-1 to Gordon State College on Tuesday.
Entering the game, ABAC was 1-4 against the Chargers this year. But only one of those losses was by more than two runs. It was a different story at the Chargers’ home field Wednesday as GHC’s first two batters blasted home runs for a quick 2-0 lead. The Chargers added another pair of runs in the first inning to chase ABAC starter J.R. Fordham.
On the day, GHC tallied 13 hits including four solo home runs. Chargers starter Trip Dovale was masterful, pitching all seven innings and notching the win.
Trailing 6-0 in the fourth, ABAC managed to get on the scoreboard on sophomore C.J. Rose’s solo home run. Matthew Glass added another solo shot in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-2. GHC added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Rose struck again, this time with a massive blast over the centerfield wall to make it 8-3. However, with the 8-run mercy rule lurking in the background, ABAC’s luck ran out in the bottom of the seventh when the Chargers scored three runs to end the game.
Sophomore pitcher Trypp Lumpkin did an admirable job in relief for the Stallions. The sophomore left-hander from Schley County entered the game in the first and did not allow the Chargers to put together a big inning before being chased in the seventh. Lumpkin allowed seven runs over 6 1/3 innings on eight hits while striking out four.
Rose led the Stallions at the plate with the pair of solo blasts. Third baseman Chasin Cash added a pair of hits.
