Baseball Prevails at ABAC, 8-3
TIFTON, Ga. – Santa Fe baseball picked up their fourth win away from home, topping Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College for a second time this season in an 8-3 result over the Stallions.
In the top of the first inning, a double to left feld from Luis Rodriguez brought Jonathan Logsdon around to score to put the Saints in front.
Tyler Shelnut's team-leading third home run of the season made it 2-0 in the third inning, and the Saints added one more tally in the frame with a sacrifice fly from Santiago Garavito.
Logsdon put the Saints ahead 4-0 with a double to score Jevin Relaford in the top of the fourth, and the lead was extended to 5-0 in the next inning when Logsdon earned a walk with the bases loaded.
Santa Fe plated three runs in the seventh inning to provide more insurance for the pitching staff with an 8-0 lead. Shelnut had a two-RBI double in the left-center field gap to highlight the at-bats.
Saints starting pitcher Mitchell Gross excelled and kept the ABAC bats quiet. The freshman made it through six scoreless innings, giving up just one walk and six hits while striking out five.
Gross gave way to Garfield Johns in the bottom of the seventh, and Johns posted a zero.
The Stallions were able to score three runs off Mikel Cuvet in the eighth inning, ending a streak of 16 innings without a run against the Saints this season. Trent Becker entered, however, and kept ABAC from getting any closer.
Becker tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, throwing 13 of 20 pitches for strikes, while Eduardo Yepes entered in the ninth and got the final out with a swinging strikeout.
The Saints' offense had 11 hits in the game, four of which were for extra-base hits. The lineup was productive through the order, with nine different players recording a hit. Santa Fe also displayed patience at the plate, earning a season-high nine walks.
Shelnut had two hits on the home run and double, accumulating a run scored and three RBI. Rodriguez went 2-of-5 with a double and an RBI, while Logsdon scored twice and reached base on three occasions with a hit, two RBI, and two walks.
Wiggs' Words
"Mitchell Gross gave us a great start with six shutout innings," said Head Coach Johnny Wiggs. "It was nice to see him work out of the one jam that he faced in the sixth. We need him to be good for us in conference."
"The hitters had a lot of good at-bats fouling off tough pitches throughout the game. It definitely was a good road win."
