ABAC Softball Team Wins GCAA Region XVII Title

ABAC Softball Team Wins GCAA Region XVII Title

For the first time since 2002, ABAC's softball team is going to the NJCAA national championship tournament in St. George, Utah. The Fillies defeated the top seeded Bulldogs 8-0 in a 5-inning run ruled championship game to take the GCAA/Region XVII title.

The second-seeded Fillies took the shortest route through the Region XVII double-elimination tournament playing only three games and staying in the winners bracket the entire tournament.

ABAC started the tournament with a 2-1 opening game win over East Georgia State on a two run home run in the bottom of the first by GCAA Player of the Year Taylor Layfield. Samantha Davis pitched a complete game 5 hitter allowing the Bobcats lone run in the first inning.

The Taylor Layfield show went on full display in the winners bracket game yesterday as she hit two home runs with 3 RBI's offensively and then pitched a complete game with 3 strikeouts in a 6-4 win and a spot in the title game.

In the championship game the Fillies faced a rematch with number one seed GMC, who won their first game of the day on day two to get back in the championship game. But this game was all ABAC as Sam Davis again led the Fillies on the mound as she gave up only two hits with three strikes and Taylor Layfield had 3 RBI's. The key to the ABAC title game win was clutch hitting. Seven of ABAC's eight runs all came with two outs and as a result the Fillies were able to hoist the champion plaque for 2019.

Next stop for the Fillies (41-14) is St. George, Utah, for the NJCAA national tournament May 22nd-25th.
