Golf team competes in last tournament

ABAC's golf team participated in their last tournament for the fall season at the Walter St. Invitational in Morristown, Tennessee. ABAC came in third and placed among the leading five teams with only 36 holes. The team held an overall score of 325-309-634. Tyler White led the way with a 2-round score of 156 and Matthew Cheek came in with a 157. White finished in 13th place overall after hitting 82 holes in the first round and 74 in the second round. Cheek followed closely behind in 19th place with a 79 and 78 in the first and second rounds, respectively.

While at the Walter St. Invitational, ABAC played against Walters State CC, Tusculum University, Spartanburg Methodist College, Union College and Bluefield St. College.

The golf team's goal each year is to advance to the Nationals. Coach Larry Byrnes said that the team has been fortunate enough to do so for the past three years. The first step to advancing to Nationals is going to the district tournament in April, which the team plans to do.

While looking back on the season, he and the players are already preparing for the spring semester. "As far as the season, each player would say there is a lot of room for improvement and we will have to in order to accomplish our goals for the spring. We will prepare as we always do, work hard on the short game and continue to play in quality tournaments."

Adam Park, Will Bozeman and Matthew Cheek will be returning for their final semester this upcoming spring. Gavin Szydlo, Tyler White, Hunter Dokey and Thomas Lupien are also expected to return. Byrnes also noted that he will be signing some new players for the next season as well. He recently went on a recruiting tour for the spring 2019 season.

When asked about which of the four tournaments were their favorite, Byrnes said, "probably the Sea Island Tournament was the one we enjoyed most. The retreat course over there is really good and a challenge for the kids. I feel they would say the same thing." Best of luck to the ABAC golf team for the next semester.
